End of School Celebration at the Saratoga Farmers' Market 7/3

Celebrate the end of school and the beginning of summer! On Wednesday, July 3, 3-6 pm at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market at High Rock Park, children and families are invited to a FREE concert by The Tick Brothers and lots of free, fun activities and food tastings. Barb Biagioli, CHC will have healthy snacks and activities for the kiddos, local artist Carolyn Justice will host watercolor painting, Adirondack Dreamcatcher Farm will have free pony rides, and we'll be dishing out free fruit and yogurt cones at our POP Club tent! At POP Club, kids will receive a $2 POP coin and their second stamp in their POP Passport! It's our 4th season of POP Club and we are so grateful for the support from @The Christopher Dailey Foundation. This event is rain or shine!

The 3rd Annual BIG Bubble Party Photos

We had SUCH a blast at the 3rd Annual BIG Bubble Party and you guys definitely kept us all busy, it was such a good turnout and we had so much fun hanging out with everyone and meeting everyone! A big thank you to our sponsors, especially our presenting sponsor The Little Gym of Saratoga, their booth was busy from before the event even started and they were the last ones to wrap up! Yoga Story Time with Guest Star Betty Larrea at Northshire Bookstore 7/5

Join Northshire Bookstore for an interactive yoga story time and book signing with author and yoga instructor Betty Larrea on Friday, July 5th at 10:30am. The author will share her book "Lucinda's Magical Yoga Adventure" and take children on a magical yoga adventure with Lucinda, as they pretend to "be" the animals and characters they meet in the story. All they need is a little imagination to discover their connection to themselves, their bodies and the world around them. Betty will read the book and guide children through a series of fun yoga poses, breathing and relaxation exercises.

This event is for suggested for children age 2 and up, and  their families. Free and open to the public, no registration required. Northshire Bookstore is located at 424 Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

Saratoga County 4-H "Camp Wild"

Saratoga County 4-H is proud to announce its flagship program “Camp Wild” for this summer. “Camp Wild” is designed to provide summer camps in Saratoga County with off-site Enrichment Experiences. Three carefully cultivated, educational sessions will be held at the 4-H Training Center on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa. They will give campers hands on learning practice. Children will fish, hike, and learn outdoor skills such as identification of indigenous plants and animals, basic first aid, and survival skills for when things in nature don’t go quite as planned. “Camp Wild” will also offer families, of all kinds, five chances to participate in guided hikes at five different areas throughout Saratoga County. This is a perfect opportunity for parents looking for support and encouragement on living a more outdoor focused lifestyle.

“I want to give kids and families a truly authentic natural experience. The kind of life we had before technology took over; the way I grew up. We are so blessed to have access to the 4-H Training Center and the vast array of natural tools it provides. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring this program to such a beautiful outdoor space” says Andrea Love Smith, Camp Director and 4-H Outreach Educator.

The 4-H Training Center is like nothing else in the area. There are hiking trails with a special one just for Bluebird watching, a small fishing pond, a fire pit and so much more. It is the perfect setting to spearhead this new platform. This fully immersive educational experience will go on to highlight someof the community’s most serene locations, providing ideal backdrops for the perfect outdoor family day.

The first Summer Camp Enrichment Experience will be held July 10th. Five more dates will be available for campers. Camp directors should contact Cornell Cooperative Extension as soon as possible. Space is limited and expected to fill quickly. Payment of $5/ camper is required at the time of reservation.

Family hikes begin July 9th and, again, space is limited with reservations necessary. It is $3/ child and $5/ adults. Payment required at the time of reservation.

Family Friendly Fiber Forum with Textile Studio 7/13

Textile Studio, a Saratoga Springs weaving shop, in collaboration with Saratoga Bridges, presents a one-day Fiber Forum for all ages and abilities at 143 Grand Ave in the Beekman Street Arts District, Saratoga Springs NY. This free, family-friendly, ADA accessible, interactive and educational event takes place on Saturday July 13 from 11 AM- 3 PM. 

Eight regional fiber artists including spinners, weavers, machine knitter, feltmaker, quilter, and papermaker will be set up outdoors at the corner of Beekman St. and Grand Ave. Each artist will be demonstrating their craft and displaying finished items along with work in progress. Visitors can try out the equipment and craft materials with the artists' guidance.  Saratoga Bridges, who provides programs for adults with developmental disabilities, will be onsite with students who participate in their Day Hab program weaving classes.

Fiber Forum contributors include Sheep shearer Joe Hamilton, Foster Sheep Farm, spinner Carole Foster, art quilter Susan Rivers, knitter Lioubov Ermalova, silk painter Kathy Klompas, felter Joy Muller-McCoola, paper maker Nanette Miranda and weavers Tegan and Eric Frisino.

Participant Susan Rivers stated “I am excited to be part of this celebration of fiber and thank the Textile Studio and Saratoga Bridges for creating this unique event and providing a venue to share my craft.  I embrace any opportunity to educate the pubic on the quintessential folk art of quilting and its evolution into an art form.  Keeping with the fiber theme, I will be demonstrating how to use silk fibers to create unique art quilts.”

Along with the live demos and displays of all the different fiber arts, there will be a “Sheep to Shawl” contest with 2 teams of spinners and weavers competing to complete a shawl from scratch - beginning with spinning fleece to winding bobbins, then to weaving the shawl warp on handlooms. Starting at 11 AM, our feature presentation will be Joe Hamilton who will be shearing sheep and discussing the process during the live demo.  

Come and get all your questions answered about the fiber arts and try your hand on a loom, knitting machine or spinning wheel. Or just come to pet the beautiful sheep!

Saratoga’s All American Celebration

Celebrate 4th of July in downtown Saratoga Springs!

Saratoga's 2019 All-American Celebration will begin on July 4th with the Firecracker 4 Road Race, a four-mile road race through Saratoga Springs

NEW this year, the Annual Citizenship Ceremony at the Saratoga National Historical Park will be live-streamed for everyone to watch at 10:00 a.m., inside the Saratoga Springs City Center or on your own computer, cell phone or other mobile device.

During the day, local retailers will be taking part in a special Independence Week celebration inviting people to shop local and to support local independent store owners. Local restaurants will also offer a range of “All American” Meal deals.

Everyone is invited to purchase an official Saratoga All American Celebration t-shirt at Impressions of Saratoga and Dark Horse Saratoga, both on Broadway, now through July 5th. Proceeds from the sale of these t-shirts will help to fund the fireworks and entertainment. The Chamber is urging people to buy these patriotic t-shirts before Independence Day and to wear them on July 4th.

The main event will take place that night in historic Congress Park. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the Audiostars will perform live outside of the Canfield Casino.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., Benjamin Franklin will come on stage to read the Declaration of Independence. This special presentation will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display!

Join our RagTag group of thread-barren, yarn-spinning characters around the fire as they explore a new patchwork world. You'll be entwined with our group of mismatched artists as they stitch together a tapestry of talents: from high-flying, knot-tying, gravity defying aerialists, to loopy jugglers, to musicians that pull your heart strings, and comedy that leaves you in stitches. Join us as we gather stories that never got to be told. Can we find a common thread? Come witness how six separate threads are inevitably intertwined.

Where's Waldo in Downtown Saratoga Springs with Northshire Bookstore

Where’s Waldo? In Downtown Saratoga Springs of course! The famous children’s book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs will be hiding in local businesses and community organizations throughout our downtown this July. Join in Northshire Bookstore’s fun scavenger hunt and win great prizes! Starting Monday, July 1st at 10:00am and ending Wednesday, July 31st at 9:00pm.

Stop by Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs to pick up your passport and begin the search. The 3rd Annual BIG Bubble Party is on Friday, June 28th from 1-3pm and we can’t wait to kick off summer with everyone! Above see the schedule for the party, and here are some FAQs about the BIG Bubble Party, we hope to see you at Congress Park tomorrow!

• Mini Bubble giveaways and carousel token giveaways start at 1pm at the Mini City table and will be given away on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. Face painting will also be done at the Mini City table until 1:45.

• We hope you also bring your own bubbles, bubble wands, bubble machines and any other fun bubble making creations to add to the fun, especially during the Bubble Flash Mob at 2pm.

• A “Bubble Flash Mob” is simple, we all gather in the middle of the park at 2pm, crank up the music, and count to 3 when we all blow bubbles at the same time, creating the biggest bubbles we can.

• Right after the Bubble Flash Mob, the Dance Lab will lead kids in a special game of Freeze Dance.

• Throughout the event you can visit the sponsor tables which will all have giveaways and/or free activities for kids. This event is for all ages, but most activities will be geared toward children 10 and under.

• Food is not sold at the event but you are welcome to bring your own.

• You are also welcome to bring any outdoor games, kites, etc to have fun with in the park, it’s going to be a beautiful day!

• This event is RAIN OR SHINE, and will only be cancelled in case of thunder and lightning. There is no rain date if the event is canceled.

Summer 2019 Family Saturdays at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College announces its Summer 2019 Family Saturdays, a series of multigenerational creative collaborations on each Saturday from July 13 through August 10.

Each program includes looking at artwork in the museum’s summer exhibitions, discussing and sharing ideas, and engaging in a hands-on art activity inspired by those conversations. The summer exhibitions include Streb Action, Elevator Music 39: Bug, Beauty and Bite, and Ree Morton: The Plant That Heals May Also Poison. The free programs run from 2:00 to 3:30 PM and are suitable for children ages 5 and older, accompanied by their adult companions.

 Registration is required. You can register beginning one week before each program. To register, call the Tang’s Visitors Services Desk at 518-580-8080. The Tang welcome visitors of all abilities. Be prepared to get messy and have fun!

SUMMER 2019 FAMILY SATURDAYS

July 13: Superhuman Shields!

After exploring Streb Action and the message of overcoming one’s fears and finding our own strengths, we will create our own superhuman shields that celebrate the different kinds of strengths that we have all have the power to activate in ourselves!

July 20: Connecting Sound, Color and Movement

For our Elevator Music 39: Bug, we will discover how our sense of sound and color can be closely linked through a digital application called Bug. “Bug turns what you see into pure color, and color into music.” We will go explore the colors and sounds of our environment and then create our own sound by combining a wide range of colored papers and patterns. Be prepared to discover your own symphony of color and sounds!

July 27: Funky Storyboards

After looking at the whimsical Frank Moore works on paper based on Moore and Jim Self’s film and ballet Beehive, we will create our own storyboard inspired by these funky works! Materials include poster board, stamping, markers, felt, and an assortment of specialty papers.

August 3: Out of This World!

Come and explore works in our Tang collection of outer space and works that are inspired by the universe! We will create our own cosmic arworks out of paper, model magic, cardboard, metallic markers, felt, and more.

August 10: What a Relief!

After looking at works by Ree Morton, whose prolific career spanned a wide range of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, we will create our own wild multimedia relief using cardboard, model magic, felt, yarn, specialty papers, markers, and found objects.

Splash Park at Gavin Park

The Gavin Park Splash Park in Wilton will be open on June 29th and 30th before it opens for the season on July 1st and then will be open daily from 11 am-6 pm until Labor Day.

The Splash Park will be CLOSED during bad weather. In the case of thunder/lightning, the Splash Park will close immediately, and patrons will be asked to leave. No refunds will be issued.

The Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show at Maple Avenue Middle School 7/1

The Orchard Project is thrilled to announce a performance of The Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show by the award-winning media group, the Story Pirates, taking place on July 1st at 4PM at Maple Avenue Middle School (515 Maple Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866).

Here at Mini City we are BIG champions of Mom Run Businesses (maybe because we are one ourselves?) and over the years we have profiled some amazing moms who run their own businesses and we want to keep that train going with a regular monthly feature on local moms as part of our Mom Boss Profiles.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for mothers who run their own businesses, either from home or outside the home, and all working moms who would like to share their experience with juggling the demands of motherhood with their working life.

How do I apply?

Simply fill out the form below, and we will reach out via email if you are chosen to be the featured profile that month. We ask that only the person who wants to be featured fill the form out, no nominations (in case the person you are nominating isn’t interested in being featured). If you know someone who you think would love to be featured, just send them a link to this form!

What happens next?

Once we have chosen a mom for that month we will reach out via email and put together a featured profile story that will be featured in that month’s Mini City Magazine as well as here on the website and across our social media channels.

What if I didn’t get picked?

Don’t sweat it, since we can only feature one person per month, we will create a waitlist of upcoming features. If you apply and don’t hear back right away that just means that we are working through our list on a first come, first served basis. Our features will also have a local, small business focus. We are so grateful for all of the submissions and will make time and room to feature everyone as it comes available.

How sometimes they feel so perfectly knit together, while at other times they feel more like a tangled web of knots? Every fiber has a source, but what keeps them from completely unraveling? Woven together, these loose ends create a new story.

Join our RagTag group of thread-barren, yarn-spinning characters around the fire as they explore a new patchwork world. You'll be entwined with our group of mismatched artists as they stitch together a tapestry of talents: from high-flying, knot-tying, gravity defying aerialists, to loopy jugglers, to musicians that pull your heart strings, and comedy that leaves you in stitches. Join us as we gather stories that never got to be told. Can we find a common thread? Come witness how six separate threads are inevitably intertwined.
