The Beagle School

The Beagle School was chartered in 1972 by a group of dedicated and energetic parents who had a special vision of early childhood education. The philosophy of our school is derived from the exploration, discovery, and the sense of wonder that belonged to Charles Darwin and his ship, the HMS Beagle. For over forty years, the Beagle School has provided an exceptional experience for young children in the Saratoga Springs, NY region.

The mission of The Beagle School is to provide a quality early education experience that fosters the sense of wonder and discovery that naturally exists in all children. Through a variety of enriching experiences, children will be supported in all areas of development, with a particular emphasis on such traits as self-motivation, responsibility, and creativity, as well as kindergarten readiness. This will be accomplished through The Beagle School working together with families to assure a safe and nurturing environment for each child.

The Waldorf early childhood approach is firmly grounded in the science of child development and allows children the space to learn and grow by actively engaging in their world. Students have ample opportunity to build, dig, climb, garden, sing, listen to stories and perform meaningful chores like cooking, tidying and caring for themselves and their environment. Unstructured free play allows a child to learn through doing and to develop collaboration and social skills. Whether it’s the words of a song, activities of the day, or the seasons –  regular rhythm develops a feeling of security in a child, allowing him to move through the world with ease and confidence. All Waldorf Saratoga early childhood teachers are Waldorf-trained in the social, physical and emotional development of young children. By respecting what the young child needs to develop a relationship with the world on their own terms, the Waldorf Early Childhood Program aims to provide the foundation necessary to manifest later in your child’s life as a love of learning, social and emotional intelligence, the ability to think creatively and solve problems, an appreciation for beauty and the arts and a deeper connection to the world.

Exploring the world with their sense and bodies allows young children to develop much more than strength and balance. Countless studies have shown the importance of outdoor play to children’s mental, intellectual and emotional development as well as physical.

The multi-aged kindergarten classes include lunch, which the children help to prepare, instilling a sense of contribution to the community and self-sufficiency and competency, as well as developing motor skills and concentration.

Our two-year old Little Explorers preschool program offers a warm, loving environment that gives students their first introduction to school routines, peer socialization, and being away from home. It is a play-based curriculum that includes free-play, circle time, story time, music and movement, teacher-led art activities, and outdoor play. Children are given an introduction to concepts such as letters, counting, shapes, colors and patterning. It is held at 107 Circular St. in Saratoga Springs.  It runs either M/W or T/Th from 9:30-11:30.  Your child must be 2 by 9/1 to register for this class.  There is a 5:1 student teacher ratio and maxes out at 10 students/class.

Through several seasonal celebrations and observations, children develop a sense of rhythm, security and wonder.

Our four year old AM preschool program builds on our three-year old curriculum, expanding ideas and concepts, encouraging more independence, and giving students the tools for success in pre-kindergarten skills; such as, name writing, language, pre-math skills, critical and scientific thinking, social skills, and fine and gross motor skills. Each class follows a daily schedule, which includes free play, circle time, calendar activities, music and movement, learning centers, story time, and outdoor play.  Classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, in the morning (Discoverers: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm).  Students must be 4 by 12/1.

Our three-year-old preschool program begins to introduce students to pre-kindergarten skills within the framework of a fun, theme-based program. Each class follows a daily schedule, which includes free play, circle time, calendar activities, music and movement, learning centers, story time, and outdoor play. In addition, children work on name recognition and writing, fine and gross motor skills, and pre-math skills throughout their day. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, either in the morning (9:00 am – 12:00 pm), or in the afternoon (12:40 pm – 3:40 pm). Students must be 3 by 12/1.

Preschool and kindergarten classes at the Forest Kindergarten campus spend most of the day outside year-round. Always changing, nature provides new problems to solve and situations to explore depending on the season and weather.

Our four year old PM preschool program (Beyond Beagle: 12:40 – 3:40 pm) encompasses what we cover in the Discoverers class, as well as incorporating themes and activities that highlight and emphasize creativity, our natural world through the seasons, foreign language and diversity. Students must be 4 by 12/1.

Aftercare is available at both campuses and includes snack, nap time and additional playtime.
