Laurie Berkner is Coming to Saratoga :: Presented by The Beagle School!

October 12, 2017 Jenny O'Keefe
22310665_1600989959921295_4114568313344002598_n.jpg

"The Queen of Children's Music" is coming to Saratoga Springs! Presented by The Beagle School, tickets are on sale now for this morning of live music, dancing and FUN with Laurie Berkner as she plays all your favorite songs!

Recognized as the queen of children's music (People magazine), Laurie Berkner is a singer, songwriter, lyricist, author, and founder of Two Tomatoes Records, LLC.  She has released twelve best-selling, award-winning albums over the course of the past two decades, was the first recording artist ever to perform in music videos on Nick Jr., appeared regularly on the network's Jack's Big Music Show, and helped develop the short-form animated musical preschool series Sing It, Laurie! on Sprout TV.

The Beagle School has a lot to celebrate right now too, because their charming “little red schoolhouse” now has a new director and a fresh, updated new look inside and outside.

The school’s new director is a past President of the Board of Directors at the school and has volunteered there for 7 years.  Jessica Todtenhagen is the mom of two Beagle alums and one current Beagle student.  She has a Master’s Degree in Education from the University at Buffalo.  She replaces Fran Rauchwerger who left after 5 years of dedicated service at the Beagle School.  The school also has a new business manager, Colleen Park, who is also a Beagle parent and previous member of the board of directors at the school.

The “little red school house” has been significantly updated inside and outside over several years. Students now have a brand new swing set structure and a new play area/toy shed outside.  The school also had the driveway and walkway paved and volunteers and teachers updated its landscaping.  It has a new, vibrant tile display in the cubby area with artwork from students. In 2016, this Regent Street location (where the 3 and 4-year-old programs are run) had a major renovation inside as well. The learning and play areas were updated with new furniture, paint and toys.  The school also has an updated, more efficient kitchen area where healthy snacks from parents are stored and distributed to students during snack time.  The Circular Street location, where the 2-year-old program is run, was also updated in 2016.

These improvements were part of a multiple-phase plan that stretched over the last 5 years.  More improvements are planned for the school this spring. The indoor and outdoor improvements are the result of money raised from underwriting donations from members of the Beagle School community and fundraising efforts such as the Beagle School’s annual Read-a-Thon and the “First Annual Saratoga Day of Play.”

“I am thrilled to be joining these wonderful teachers and this school, “said Todtenhagen.  “We are constantly working together to enrich the early education of our children and share the importance of learning through play and discovery.  Thanks to the support of Beagle friends and families, we were able to update the inside and outside of our beloved school.  The children have enjoyed many aspects of our improvements already, especially the new swing set in the backyard.”

For more than 40 years, the Beagle School has provided an award-winning preschool experience for young children in the Saratoga Springs area. It is dedicated to the exploration, discovery and the sense of wonder that belonged to Charles Darwin and his ship, the HMS Beagle.  The Beagle School is a 501(c)(3). Parents and community members serve on the Board of Directors to set policies and oversee the general operation of the school. Click here to read more about The Beagle School.

Pitney Meadows Community Farm is having a Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 8 from 1 PM - 5 PM, admission is FREE!

Pitney Meadows Community Farm will be bringing the community together to enjoy games, healthy farm-fresh snacks, horse drawn wagon rides, and information on Pitney Meadows and their vision for the future.

What is Pitney Meadows Community Farm?

Pitney Meadows Community Farm was founded in 2016 to preserve the last operating farm in Saratoga Springs, and to forge a new mission for the 166-acre property in sustainable farming, education in agriculture, and the training of young farmers. They're off to a fast start with the construction of their 55-bed Community Gardens and a 6,000-square foot high tunnel that serves both as an event space and greenhouse for growing vegetables. Major priorities going forward include the establishment of their Children's Garden and Greenhouse, renovation of existing farm buildings, and the development of trails along Geyser Creek for education and recreation.

About the Tang Teaching Museum
The Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College is a pioneer of interdisciplinary exploration and learning. A cultural anchor of New York's Capital Region, the institution's approach has become a model for university art museums across the country—with exhibition programs and series that bring together the visual and performing arts with fields of study as disparate as history, astronomy, and physics. The Tang has one of the most rigorous faculty-engagement initiatives in the nation, the Mellon Seminar, and robust publication and touring exhibition initiatives that extend the institution's reach far beyond its walls. The Tang Teaching Museum's building, designed by architect Antoine Predock, serves as a visual metaphor for the convergence of ideas and exchange the institution catalyzes. The Tang is open Tuesday through Sunday, from noon to 5 pm, with extended hours until 9 pm on Thursday.
