ABOUT FRIDAY'S PERFORMANCE:
New York City Ballet performs Balanchine Short Stories...
- La Sonnambula – is a ballet about a beautiful sleepwalking woman, a poet who falls in love with her, and a jealous husband. One of the most fantastic things about this ballet is that the sleepwalker is on pointe for the entire dance. She appears to glide.
- Prodigal Son – is a version of the biblical story; this one ends with the son’s return home to the arms of his father. The dance, gesture, costumes, and scenery are very dramatic. One of the most famous high flying leaps for a male dancer can be seen towards the beginning of the ballet when the Prodigal Son jumps over the fence of his father’s house. Pointe work for the lead female dancer.
- Firebird – is an extravaganza of staging that feeds your senses – the colors, music, and action are all breathtaking. Balanchine’s version of the Russian fairytale about a magical bird (the Firebird) who may be called upon in times of need was created around the costumes and sets designed by famed artist Marc Chagall. Chagall is best known for his dreamlike imagery…whimsical and haunting. The music of Igor Stravinsky is powerful, melodic, and majestic. This work has one of the great finales…gives you chills.
